What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy translates directly as the healing of the mind. The literal definition is Psycho (Gk) Relating to the mind or psychology and Therapy (Gk) Healing i.e. healing of the mind, emotions or spirit.

Psychotherapy is  concerned with the whole person, his or her life history, past and present relationships, and conscious and unconscious processes. Therapy is a process that allows each person to come to a fuller understanding of their abilities, difficulties, motivations or worries in conjunction with the therapist. In therapy an individual can learn to identify the causes of and solutions to problems of anxiety, low self-esteem and difficulties experienced in personal and family relationships.

As a psychotherapist, my role is to enable the Client to gain such insight. My belief is that the client is in the best position to resolve their own difficulties, although they may need help finding the answer or the strength to enable change.

Counselling and psychotherapy is for anyone having difficulties with relationships, going through a major adjustment or decision making crisis, or who may want to gain some insight in terms of self awareness. Counselling deals with ordinary every day problems and issues, while psychotherapy generally deals with deeper mental and emotional problems.

Feeling anxious, sad, stressed, fearful or lonely. Finding it difficult to talk? Need someone to listen? Need Space?
